The key point is not in a drama of a certain episodically selected content but in its, so to speak, “vivid emotional language support”. Let’s talk about some variations of the obscene language, vulgar insults and popular curses in a Ukrainian communication domain.
It is obvious that human interactions using vulgar or coarse vocabulary have a stronger influence on some people than interaction without profanity “supplements”. The very fact that a speaker grasps their goal is doubtful, however, it is difficult to remain indifferent to such messages.
Interestingly, five or six years ago, the author experienced a similar set of language nuances from his political opponents at his own address and, frankly, was surprised with a cultural wildness and moral awkwardness of such interaction. But it seemed the dragon’s slayers had abundantly grown their thick skin and have nurtured even more impressive tails. It has been time now to master some fiery breaths.
It might be appropriate, in this case, to use a scientific term “obscene vocabulary”, but it drastically narrows down a scope of much wider social communication discourse. The richness of the Ukrainian language contextually allows even completely neutral words to sound and be heard like disgust.
At times of a political crisis, massive social hysteria has a tendency to increasingly turn into panic. A specific model of verbal behavior shows the prominent signs of the ritual-magic language. Close to a witchcraft.
It is an attempt of a magic/contactless influence on people and their physical space because the other ways to manage them by social networks’ virtuosi are unfeasible.
It is worth to mention, that paid curse-makers are by no means influential and interesting personalities in a hierarchy of profuse swearers. In some archaic cultures, a number of hired grievers for the dead determined a status of the deceased. It was nothing in comparison with a real grief of the loved ones, regardless of how desperately the fakers screamed or pulled out their hair.
In our case, a large number of people stubbornly curse each other free of charge and, apparently, even without personal satisfaction.
They do that simply because it is their internal need.
Traditionally, the curse language has been used by a least protected social strata as the most important element of a persuasive influence. It was widely assumed that the majority of young people and people with an inadequate education comprised this group. Criminal circles are a separate topic. A careful attitude to words in a contrast with everyday challenging routine is a quite common element in a criminal environment.
Nowadays, the majority of Ukrainian population considers themselves as being unprotected and an “impoverishment” meme, albeit ironically, has become quite popular. It is not very clear for those unprotected, though, against what exactly they need to be protected, but political demonology remains quite useful.
Eroticism of verbal activities and fetishization of the various physiological processes is a gift for classical Freudians. In practical terms, it is a kind of defense against a harsh social pressure. To put it simply, a person continues to experience an increasingly growing pressure from the outside world.
As people often direct their curses towards a specific object, it could be compared with an accusation of the God of Rain because somebody forgot an umbrella. Therefore, this person forever has earned, for his/her own deep conviction, a good weather for life.
The curse/profanity language, as well as other kinds of emotional statements, often serve to sensitively raise /lower the listeners’ (readers’) level to a speaker’s/writer’s own excitement intensity. It is done, according to Plato, “to spiritually approach oneself and lead to their own event vision cave.”
Social network exchanges is an illusion of an almost non-stop communication, in which the obscene language symbolizes a critically important stage of a dialogue. A classical Ukrainian mini bus argument (soon it happen all over the country) is a good example: “Open the windows, it is difficult to breathe!” versus “Put them down, I cannot stand this draft!” The scandal grows always on an ascendant scale with the unchanged level of a personal conviction and willingness to defend your own rights.
Those passionate theatrical dialogues affect neither a ticket price nor a route length.
But social networks users sincerely believe in a substantial impact of their dialogues on others. Let’s try to classify those hyper-emotional texts and remarks. The main rivals in play are the militant-persistent curse language against the aggressive-defensive one.
In fact, there is no difference between them. Obscene words and expressions seem to “free” their authors from multiple ethical prohibitions and moral conventions especially in dramatic talks about the country’s fate.
They are talking about their own destiny projecting it on the country. Their personal life, material status, etc. in a vast majority of cases, have not changed with a change of presidents or parliaments. The one who passionately speaks on their own behalf has a risk to look as an aggressive and rude person. This does not increase self-esteem for the sake of which,
in fact, people “hang” in social networks with all with all their “mimimis”, “kitties” and “selfies”. The obscene language “to better knot words together” had earlier departed to the BK and “Odnoklasniki” and remained close to a messenger in the FB.
On the contrary, an “echo”, which is the interception and distortion of the opponent phrases, has been flourishing.
Echolalia is a mental symptom which traditionally interests psychiatrists. It adds to the argument that our persistent neuroses could further move to another subsequent phase.
There is good news for networks excessive cursers: a gender balance becomes quite even. Later we will discuss its physiological cause.
Those with heavy usage of obscene words in social networks can fairly consider themselves as more honest people than those who deliberately try to distance themselves from lies using neutral or abstract words.
Liars use less frequently the first or third person pronouns. Instead, they frequent with verbs of motion with negative expressions. The “truth-teller” obscene language in this case is often used to express “unfiltered” feelings and sincerity.
From an ecological point of view, such users are similar to those “good” house keepers, who thoroughly clean their own yard, but throw out their garbage in a public park.
Neurochemistry of arguments is important here since no human emotions can avoid a release of hormones.
The apparent antagonism between male sex hormones (androgens) and hormones of stress (corticosteroids) explains, in particular, a reduction of distress symptoms during sex.
In critical situations (and sex is perceived by the subconscious mind as a reaction to that) human and animal organisms produce painkillers: endorphins. Their release into blood causes anger, laughter or sexual arousal.
Emotions increase the release of endorphins, make them pain-relieving and improve self-esteem.
A verbal exchange with sexual content, especially among people who are not inclined to it in their routine life, might be an indicator of distress which could grow into reactive psychosis.
A bit about the gender specificity of sex invectives in social networks. Traditionally, verbal erotica is used by women, men, etc. It features gender differences.
This is connected with the speaker’s status and recipient group’s gender. Google and equal access to porno even the usage of curse vocabulary by different genders.
It might be problematic to determine with certainty a cause-effect relationship. Humans get a democratically equal number of androgens using the same curse language context. And, perhaps, the most dedicated cursers, who swear publicly as well as in the comfort of their personal spaces, have already a hormonal imbalance.
If we talk about group rituals (and social networks are a platform for such rituals), it is worth to mention the ritual dances of New Zealand Maori Haka.
Dancers perform stomping their legs, beating themselves in the hips and chests and rhythmically exclaim various frightening words.
We could watch the most politically correct variants of those dances on Youtube. Peru-Peru is its military version and usually is performed without clothing. A growing tense in different parts of the body during the dance is considered as a true manifestation of higher military valor.
Contemporary social networks are full of such type of “haking”. Their major problem, however, is in the following: it is impossible to break anything on Facebook with words. Regardless of how frightening or impressive they look. However, it all has been made sincere and from the bottom of people’s hearts.
And that is true.
