ISER and UNDP will check how Ukrainian strategic documents are aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations Development Program and the Institute for Social and Economic Research have launched a joint project on screening strategic policy documents of Ukraine against Sustainable Development Goals identified for implementation in Ukraine. In the coming months, about 60 key documents in the field of energy, effective management, trade, agriculture, education, medicine, social protection, infrastructure, tourism, information, employment, culture, and sports will be analysed.

In particular, we are talking about such documents as the Strategy for Sustainable Development of Ukraine for the period up to 2020, the Medium-term Plan of Priority Actions of the Government for the period up to 2020, the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, the National Security Strategy of Ukraine, the State Strategy for Regional Development for the period up to 2020 and others.

Deputy Director of Development of ISER Svitlana Kovalivska explained that the project's goal is to determine the level of integration of the Sustainable Development Goals into the state planning processes, regulations, and relevant sectoral strategies.

“After analysing several dozens of documents, the UNDP and ISER experts will develop and provide recommendations on what measures need to be taken to achieve the goals of sustainable development at the regional and all-Ukrainian level,” – explains Svitlana Kovalivska.

The joint project of ISER and UNDP, entitled “Rapid Integrated Policy Assessment (RIA) – screening strategic policy documents of Ukraine against SDGs identified for implementation in Ukraine” is the first step in the development of a roadmap for Ukraine on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The list of Goals was officially approved at the meetings of the UN General Assembly in late September 2015. It includes 17 goals and 169 specific tasks. In particular, we are talking about overcoming poverty, quality education, maintaining good health, gender equality, protecting the planet, responsible consumption, etc.
